Rangers v Motherwell: Stephen O'Donnell set to return for Ibrox showdown

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander says he expects captain Stephen O'Donnell to return to the side when they tackle Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday.

It's flag day for Steven Gerrard's side, in front of a packed stadium, with Motherwell fans unable to attend the match due to Covid restrictions.

Alexander says O'Donnell could maybe have played a part in Saturday's 2-0 Premiership win over Aberdeen, but felt it was unfair on a player who hasn't played club football for over a month through illness and injury.

He said: "Stephen has trained this week. He trained last Friday before the game but I just felt it was too much to ask.

"He had been ill a couple of times, he came off in the Scotland game, so I felt it was better for him to miss out last week.

Alexander says most of his squad are fit for the trip to Glasgow (SNS Group)

"But he has trained fully this week, he's raring to go, and that's great for us that we've got another good player available for selection.

"Apart from that I think everyone is relatively fit, so what we've got at the moment, and which we hope to maintain, is a good, competitive squad.

"I'm leaving good players off the bench, which augurs well for the future of the club, but we have to work exceptionally hard to keep these boys available and fit.

"The environment and atmosphere around the squad is good. We played a friendly yesterday where they all played 90 minutes, they're all up to speed, but we know how quickly that can change in football, so we have to work hard to maintain that."
