Rangers v Celtic live: Old Firm ends in dire goalless draw as misery at both clubs continues

Rangers and Celtic played out a dire goalless draw in the first Old Firm of the season as Russell Martin was again booed off after his miserable start to the season continued.

Martin was backed by the Rangers board following Wednesday’s 6-0 defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs and faced calls to be sacked from the club’s supporters before the arrival of Celtic

It had been a damaging week on the other side of Glasgow, too, after Celtic were stunned by FC Kairat and crashed out of the Champions League and there was a real lack of quality in the first goalless draw between the teams since 2017.

Celtic remain six points clear but Rangers perhaps missed a chance to earn their first win of the Premiership campaign in what was a fourth draw in a row. John Souttar had a first-half header ruled out for offside in a game lacking in any attacking spark.

Respite for Russell Martin despite dire Old Firm draw between Rangers and Celtic

14:36 , Ronnie Esplin

Russell Martin was handed some much-needed respite as Rangers fought out a goalless draw against Celtic at Ibrox.

The Gers boss was under mounting pressure after a 6-0 defeat by Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off on Wednesday night which saw them exit 9-1 aggregate.

The ramifications of defeat against their oldest rivals could have been dire for Martin but his side were worth a point in a dreadful encounter, albeit they remain six points behind the Parkhead outfit after four Premiership fixtures.

An interesting xG stat for this game:

Rangers (0.16) 0-0 (0.17) Celtic.

One of the lowest we’ve ever seen!

Rangers’ next match comes against Hearts – who are currently second – on 13 September at Ibrox.

Celtic’s next match comes the next day, against Kilmarnock away.

FULL-TIME! Rangers 0-0 Celtic

14:04 , Chris Wilson

It looks like Russell Martin was booed again as he walked down the Ibrox tunnel.

That result leaves his side sixth, with four draws from their opening four games.

Celtic are now top on goal difference, two goals to the good over Hearts, with both sides on 10 points.

FULL-TIME! Rangers 0-0 Celtic

13:57 , Chris Wilson

A terrible game for the neutral and both sides will be disappointed with that, even though Rangers might be happy to get a point out of it.

Both sides were poor in the final third, with the best performances coming in defence and from Diomande in midfield.

Both sides will have problems this season, even if their quality relative to the rest of the league will likely shine through in the end.

A game to forget, and quickly, with a real – and potentially conceding – lack of quality from both.

FULL-TIME! Rangers 0-0 Celtic

The referee brings the match to an end and we have a drab 0-0 draw in the first Old Firm game of the season.

The final minute and Butland launches it long, but once again Carter-Vickers heads clear. He’s another who’s been impressive today, along with Scales.

McCowan cushions a header back to his ‘keeper and that could be that.

In truth, it doesn’t feel like we’ll get a goal here either. Both sides are still exchanging possession what seems like very 30 seconds.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

Just three minutes of added time here as Diomande is deservedly announced as man of the match. He’s been everywhere for the hosts.

CLOSE!

Lovely play from Gassama as he stands up Tierney and beats him in the box for the first time today.

HALF-TIME! Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:52 , Chris Wilson

The referee blows the whistle for half-time and this Old Firm derby is level at the break.

Rangers have probably just about edged it, with Celtic offering precious little in attack but looking solid overall in defence, with Scales and Carter-Vickers making a series of important clearances and Kieran Tierney repeatedly getting the better of Gassama.

However, it’ll be Russell Martin who’s the happier of the two managers at the break.

Nothing comes from the set-piece or the resulting Celtic counter.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:41 , Chris Wilson

39 mins

It’s been Rangers with most of the attacking impetus in the last 10 minutes but they’ve been unable to convert them into genuine, onside chances so far as they give away a free-kick on Maeda.

Celtic will be disappointed with their first half as it stands.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

Tavernier overlaps into the box and plays it into the corridor between the ‘keeper and defenders, but it’s cleared well.

Fro the corner, Barron delivers but Maeda is there to head clear.

26 mins

Rangers are indeed finding space on the counter but they’re aren’t getting forward in numbers quick enough to make it count.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:23 , Chris Wilson

23 mins

Half way into the first half and still nothing concrete in terms of chances for either side. Celtic are beginning to dominate possession though, with Rangers already happy to sit back and counter.

12:21 , Chris Wilson

20 mins

Mikey Moore’s first real involvement sees a great carry through the middle of the park, but he’s not got enough support and Rangers are forced to recycle possession before Aasgaard wins a free-kick.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:18 , Chris Wilson

17 mins

A lack of quality from both sides in truth, with both losing the ball far too easily around the middle of the pitch.

Celtic have settled a bit now though, and they’ve had plenty of possession in the last five minutes or so.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:15 , Chris Wilson

14 mins

Much better from Rangers in this first half, and Celtic are struggling to settle a bit here. Whenever they do get forward, there’s been a lack of quality in the final third, with Hatate the latest to lose it near the box.

More Rangers pressure as Barron’s inviting cross is cleared for anther long throw, which Scales puts behind for a corner.

The Ireland international is there again to head away the corner, before McGregor shepherds Gassama off the ball and Celtic have a breather.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:10 , Chris Wilson

9 mins

Rangers have settled quite well here, as Tavernier lines up the second long through in as many minutes.

Both of them cause a bit of a stir, before Hatate puts the ball behind for the first corner of the game.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:08 , Chris Wilson

6 mins

Huge shouts for a penalty as Miovski gets goal-side of the defender in the box and goes under the challenge from Scales.

There’s a nudge but he’s trying to buy it.

Rangers 0-0 Celtic

12:05 , Chris Wilson

Neither side is able to string together an attacking move in the opening stages, with Nygren losing the ball in the Rangers box just now.

Hamza Igamane departs after refusing to come on

11:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Rangers striker Hamza Igamane has moved to French club Lille.

Igamane caused a stir on Sunday when he reported an injury sustained in the warm-up when boss Russell Martin asked him to come off the bench against St Mirren at Paisley.

He was absent from the trip to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off on Wednesday night where Rangers suffered a 6-0 defeat to go out 9-1 on aggregate.

Igamane's move to the Ligue 1 club had been impending, with the fee widely reported as £10.5million and it leaves Martin with just two recognised strikers, Danilo and Cyriel Dessers.

Brendan Rodgers insists Adam Idah won't be sold without replacement

11:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers insists Swansea target Adam Idah will be going nowhere unless he is guaranteed a replacement.

The striker was absent from Celtic's training session on Friday morning as the club's transfer activity intensified ahead of the trip to face Rangers.

Reports say he was already in south Wales for a medical ahead of a move worth up to £7m, while winger Yang Hyun-jun has been linked with Birmingham.

However, after seeing his calls for attacking reinforcements largely go unheeded for the vast majority of the transfer window, Rodgers took a firm stance.

"There's interest in Adam but obviously no-one can leave here unless we get players in to replace," he said. "It's as simple as that.

"There's been negotiations and chat around it, but I have to have players in here before I can consider letting anyone go."

'We can't do that': Rodgers frustrated about Celtic approach

10:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Brendan Rodgers stressed Celtic's under-fire board "bleed for the club" - but warned the Hoops had to change their approach to the summer transfer window to progress.

The Celtic manager has told his players the Champions League "grieving" process was over, but the shock defeat came on the back of unheeded warnings from Rodgers about the need to bolster his attacking options following the exits of Kyogo Furuhashi and Nicolas Kuhn and a long-term injury to Jota.

Rodgers said: "We need to find the solutions as to why we weren't able to strengthen before the games, when clearly we wanted to.

"We need that in-depth look at that because we can't be in this cycle where we're growing for a couple of years, we get to Bayern Munich, we show great signs and then we stand still. We can't do that.”

Russell Martin ahead of facing Celtic

10:30 , Jamie Braidwood

"It's our fourth league game, the manner of defeat (against Club Brugge) makes everything feel terrible.

"We've qualified for the Europa League and we've got a chance to put things right on Sunday. All focus is on that after Wednesday night. It's about responding properly.

"I think the only way you get fans back on side is by winning football matches, simple as that, and there's no bigger game than this one.

"It's one of the biggest games in the world in terms of the interest and everyone involved, and that's the brilliant thing about football that after the disappointment in midweek you have the opportunity to put things right."

Huge pressure on Russell Martin

10:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Rangers could fall nine points behind Celtic if they lose at Ibrox.

Immediately after the thrashing to Club Brugge, Russell Martin confirmed he has the ongoing support of chief executive Patrick Stewart and director of football Kevin Thelwell.

Martin, who has recorded three wins in his first 10 matches in the role, also revealed he has since spoken to chairman Andrew Cavenagh, who led the American consortium including 49ers Enterprises that acquired a controlling stake in Rangers in June, in the wake of the disastrous defeat.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers struggled to mask his frustration over the club's Champions League play-off preparations after a shoot-out defeat against Kairat Almaty consigned them to the Europa League.

A failure to invest in attacking options came back to haunt Celtic during a goalless 210 minutes against the team from Kazakhstan and Rodgers hinted the club had manufactured their own stress.

Rangers fan group calls for Russell Martin to be sacked after Champions League routing

10:04 , Jamie Braidwood

Russell Martin has retained the backing of the Rangers board but the oldest and biggest supporters group called for the head coach to be sacked in the wake of their battering in Belgium.

Martin got the ongoing support of his employers immediately after Wednesday's 6-0 defeat by Club Brugge and he will be in the dugout for Sunday's visit of Celtic.

But a 9-1 aggregate defeat in the Champions League play-offs has seen Martin well and truly lose the faith of supporters.

The Rangers head coach was met on his return with a banner attached to the Ibrox gates stating: "Get him out now before the seats are empty".

Rangers fan group calls for Martin to be sacked after Club Brugge rout

Good morning

10:00 , Jamie Braidwood

After disastrous exits from the Champions League, a hurting Rangers and Celtic collide in the first Old Firm derby of the new season.

The two Scottish sides crashed out of European competition on back-to-back nights, with Celtic stunned on penalties by Kairat in Kazakhstan and Rangers thrashed by Club Brugge.

The 6-0 defeat in Belgian continued a terrible start at Ibrox for new manager Russell Martin, already under severe pressure just a handful of games into the season.

Having already fallen six points behind their rivals having drawn their first three games in the Scottish Premiership, victory at home may be a must for Rangers if they are to restore hope of a bright season ahead.
