Rangers UEFA coefficient boost to Scotland laid bare but Celtic still rule points roost

Rangers' run to the Europa League last 16 garnered nearly half of Scotland's coefficient points for last season, as the Premiership earned an extra Champions League place.

This season's top two will both enter the preliminary rounds of Europe's premier club competition, as our top flight ended the campaign inside UEFA's top 15.

And that was almost entirely due to the exploits of Celtic and Rangers, who between them earned 88 per cent of the coefficient points last season.

Steven Gerrard 's side went all the way from the first qualifying round to the last 16 before being beaten by Bayer Leverkusen over two legs.

That run earned them 11 club coefficient points, fuelling a meteoric rise from 206th in Europe to 94th.

And their run provided a boost to the nation's coefficient too.

The Premiership rose to 14th and earned a second Champions League qualification place, with Rangers' run accounting for 46.15 per cent of the points accrued.

All points earned are divided by the number of teams a country enters into European competition, with Celtic, Rangers, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen earning a total 9.750 last season.

That means in total Scotland earned 39 coefficient points, but 18 of those were garnered by Rangers.

Clubs earn one point for a win in qualification, with 0.5 for a draw and 0 for a loss.

In the group stage those increase to two for a win and one for a draw.

Therefore Rangers' 18 game run allowed them to add big numbers to the coefficient.

City rivals Celtic achieved a total of 16.5 points, accounting for 42 per cent of the country's total.

Killie managed a solitary win over Connah's Quay Nomads, adding only one point, while Aberdeen managed 3.5 as they made it through two rounds before being eliminated by Rijeka.

Over the years though it's Celtic who have contributed most points to the current 25.250, which is calculated over a five-year average.
