Rangers U19s miss out on Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup Final after heavy Rapid Vienna defeat

Rangers U19s have missed out on a chance to reach the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup Final after a 4-0 defeat to Rapid Vienna.

Graeme Murty's side were aiming for another youth triumph but were knocked out of the competition by the Austrians at the semi-final stage.

The youngsters trailed 2-0 at the half before Rapid Vienna added another two goals to comfortably sweep Rangers aside and secure their final berth.

It was a up and down tournament for the Light Blues as they picked up two wins and four defeats in their six matches.

Rangers faced the Austrians on day one of the tournament slipping to a 3-0 defeat, but the young Ibrox stars bounced back with wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig.

The Ibrox kids then suffered two defeats against Stuttgart and Porto on day two but did enough to earn a place in the final four.

The tournament in Germany has attracted some of the finest youth teams on the continent and Rapid Vienna turned out to be too strong as they picked up their second win over Rangers in the space of a few days.

It's 11 months since Rangers secured glory in the Al Kass Cup with Nathan Young-Coombes announcing his arrival with a host of thrilling displays.

Academy chief Craig Mulholland has been instrumental in pushing for his the stars of tomorrow to step out their comfort zone and he was the driving force behind Rangers decision to join the ground breaking Games Programme.

A host of youth stars are desperate to force their way into Steven Gerrard's first team side over the coming years. New sporting director Ross Wilson has also spoken of his desire to bring through the youngsters through the Ibrox ranks.

And the tournament in Stuttgart will have definitely provided the management team with some food for thought despite coming up short.
