Rangers transfer update as fringe star set for Arsenal battle after Euro club make him 'new member'

Swiss champions FC Zurich have reportedly won the race to end Nikola Katic's stint in the Rangers doldrums.

The centre-back spent last season out on loan in his native Croatia with Hadjuk Split following a serious knee injury. He was linked with Champions League side Maccabi Haifa earlier this week but new reports from Germanijak claim that it's Zurich who have made him a 'new member' of their team.

It's set to be an exciting season for them as they embark on a league title defence and qualified for Europa League group stage football following a 3-1 play-off success over Rangers' Premiership rivals Hearts. At that stage, Katic could be in for a heavyweight battle, with Arsenal one of the clubs in his supposed new club's group alongside Bodo/Glimt and PSV.

His official current employers sent them tumbling into that competition after Champions League play-off victory for the Light Blues. Haifa were set to be offering Katic the elite European equivalent and Hadjuk Split were also interested in bringing him back to Croatia.

It is not known yet whether it's a permanent move or loan deal but he could make his debut as early as Saturday against Lugano. Katic joined Rangers in 2018 from Slaven Belupo and scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory against Celtic at Parkhead for Rangers in 2019, their first win there since 2010.
