Rangers transfer news as Joseph Okumu hints at 'next step' amid Elfsborg exit links

Rangers-linked defender Joseph Okumu has hinted he wants to take the "next step" in his career - but only if the right opportunity opens up.

The towering 23-year-old was linked with Rangers by Swedish media in March and he has stood out at the heart of the Elfsborg defence since joining from US side Real Monarchs in 2019.

The 6ft 4in centre-back has made 38 appearances for the club in total and has earned his way into the Kenya senior team with seven appearances for his country.

It seems like a matter of time before he moves on and Steven Gerrard 's team have been outlined as a potential destination as they seek to strengthen ahead of their Premiership title defence.

Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister are rumoured to be looking at Okumu (SNS Group)

Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen note that there is also interest from Napoli, Valencia and Nice.

And they quote Okumu as saying he is keen to take the "next step" in his career.

He said: “The Swedish league is a springboard for all players. If you do it well, hopefully the right opportunity arises.

“If the right option emerges, I definitely want to take the next step.

“It depends on the project. It’s not just about going to a top league or a top team. It’s all about where I can go and develop, where my playing style fits and where I can make an impression.

“I’m not just moving to move. It is important to see the bigger picture.

“It’s the dream all players have.”

The news comes on the same day Rangers announced the signing of Zambian international Fashion Sakala, who will follow Nnamdi Ofoborh to Ibrox next season.
