Rangers transfer moonshot explored in new Ronaldo documentary as agent claims Barcelona 'humiliated' Brazil legend

Italian agent Giovanni Branchini has lifted the lid on Ronaldo Nazario's exit from Barcelona in 1997, back when Rangers wanted to sign the Brazilian for £20m.

One of the earliest examples of a transfer saga ensued when Ronaldo, having just been named world player of the year, saw his new contract negotiations collapse.

He made the decision to walk out on Barcelona after just one season and he had plenty of options on the table - including the Ibrox side.

In a new documentary released by Sky Italia on Tuesday, Branchini told the warts-and-all version of the story.

He said he and his client felt 'humiliated' by Barca's decision to announce the agreement live on TV before it had even been formalised.

And Rangers once again featured in his version of events, even though it was Inter the Brazilian eventually signed for.

He said: "There were several days of negotiation with the Barca lawyer and Vice President Gaspart. One night, my partner Carlo Pallavicino and I met with Ronaldo to talk about the renewal.

"If Barca had presented us with a clean contract, we would have signed it.

"We had nothing against the renewal of Ronaldo with Barca, but we wanted to avoid image contracts and complicated situations.

"While the negotiations remained stalled, we observed the interest shown by Lazio, Inter and Glasgow Rangers.

"At one point, we shook hands with the Barca coaches, I even called Moratti to explain that we had reached an agreement with the club.

"However, Barca announced the agreement through a press conference, and what they said on television did not correspond to what we had talked about.

"I spoke with my partners and I said to them: 'Gentlemen, we are leaving'. That press conference was an insult to our intelligence, there was no reason to expose Ronaldo to such humiliation."

Ronaldo soon joined Inter and went on to cement his reputation as one of the best strikers on the planet.

But that wasn't for the want of trying by Rangers, who wanted him to help realise their European ambitions under Walter Smith.

Branchini previously said: “The offer from Glasgow Rangers was incredible. They told us he didn’t have to play on a Saturday in the Scottish League.

“They were desperate to win the Champions League and were going to allow him to play in the European matches only.

“But Inter had followed him from when he used to play in Brazil. Barcelona reneged on a new contract and Inter were the first club to meet the release clause so he went there.”
