Rangers to stream Walter Smith memorial service which takes place at Glasgow Cathedral today

A memorial service for footballing legend Walter Smith will take place at Glasgow Cathedral today - with a free stream available of the invite-only event.

The former Rangers manager and Scotland boss passed away on October 26 aged 73 following a short illness.

A huge outpouring of tributes followed the news of his death, with fans lining the streets outside Ibrox stadium as Smith's cortege passed the club's home ground ahead of a private family ceremony on Wednesday, November 3.

Applause rang out as supporters mourned the loss in emotional and touching scenes.

The Broomloan and Copland gates at the stadium were also decorated with scarves and flowers, while the John Greig statue had wreaths left in Smith's honour.

Today's memorial service is invite-only - but Rangers have agreed to make the full service available to watch online for free online via its streaming service RangersTV, reports Glasgow Live.

The club said on Twitter yesterday: "Invited guests from the Rangers and football family, as well as wider society, will gather at Glasgow Cathedral on Friday to celebrate the life of Walter Smith.

"Supporters should note this service is not open to the general public, however, it will be available free to view across club channels later on Friday."

The club is honouring a commitment made earlier this month to stream the memorial service for devoted fans.

A statement from the club issued on November 3 read: "The passing of Walter Smith has touched every member of the Rangers family, and the club can today update that plans are being put in place for a public memorial service.

“The memorial will take place on Friday 19th November at Glasgow Cathedral. Please note, this will be an invite-only event. The service will be available for free via RangersTV."

The club previously made a 12 minute documentary paying tribute to the legendary manager free to watch via the streaming platform.

Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in for Smith after his passing on October 26.

Scottish MPs led tributes to him during a debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
