Rangers wrote on Twitter: "A hugely respected figure, Billy McNeill always conducted himself with great dignity & since his passing tributes have been made by many throughout the game, including his great rival & friend John Greig. A minute's applause will be held before Sunday's match against Aberdeen."

Celtic will also host a minute's applause for their "greatest-ever captain" during their clash with Kilmarnock in the Premiership tomorrow.

The SPFL have written to all 42 senior clubs and invited them to observe the mark of respect to celebrate his life.

The McNeill family said: “We do not believe football stadiums were ever built to be to be silent. Our father would not have wanted that. They should be places of noise, passion and enjoyment.”
