Rangers title winning hero reckons former Junior star is key Premiership striker

Steven Thompson reckons former Kilwinning Rangers frontman Ross Stewart is proving to be a key man for Ross County this season.

BBC pundit Thompson waxed lyrical about the Staggies striker after he scored a late winner against Motherwell on Saturday.

Stewart squeezed home a header at the back post to seal a 2-1 victory at Fir Park and Thomson admits he's been impressed with the 23-year-old's displays for County.

Stewart has bagged eight goals in all competitions so far this season, but it's been his Premiership performances that have caught the eye of Thompson who won two league titles in a three year spell at Rangers.

He scored a similar goal against St Mirren the previous week and Thompson, speaking on BBC Sportscene, said: "If they’d (Motherwell) have watched last week they would’ve seen that Stewart is finding theses areas. Anything that comes in deep to the back post he’s going to be there.

"Ross Stewart for me has been a really important player for County. A big performer. He’s a danger from set plays."

"He’s playing really really well for Ross County at this moment in time."

Just six years ago, Stewart was touting himself around teams in the lowest regions of the Junior game before Ardeer Thistle offered him a chance to kickstart his career.

He won a move to Kilwinning where he spent just one season before Albion Rovers gave him his first crack at senior football.

He went on to sign for St Mirren and was later loaned out to Alloa Athletic before returning to Paisley at the start of last season.

Stewart featured in the Buddies' opening game in the top flight, a sell-out 2-1 home win against Dundee, but just days later dropped down a division to sign for County.

It proved to be a wise decision as he notched 32 appearances in all competitions for the Dingwall outfit, netting 11 times along the way, as they clinched the Championship title.
