Rangers tie with Progres Niederkorn is far from over and minnows could easily have landed another shock - Hotline

Satisfied was the best word to describe the reaction of most Rangers fans who contacted the Hotline in the wake of the Europa League win over old foes Progres Niederkorn.

The Ibrox side secured a 2-0 first-leg win to take to Luxembourg next week and the chances of repeat exit to the minnows looks mercifully slim after Steven Gerrard ’s men dominated the tie.

Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo scored the goals and the only complaint over the evening was the lack of more with the Light Blues creating a host of opportunities to bury their rivals.

John Davidson, Armadale, said: “ Rangers need to turn possession into goals. They looked good on the ball and had all the trickery against Progres, but need to put more chances in the net.

“A two-goal advantage should be enough to see Rangers through, but the Danes in the next round will be a very different challenge.”

Alan McGaw, Alloa, added: “I’m very happy with the result, although the missed penalty from James Tavernier to make it 3-0 would have finished the tie.

“I thought George Edmundson was outstanding and Connor Goldson was commanding alongside him as he won everything in the air. Allan McGregor’s big save at end showed all aspects of the backline to be working well.”

Mind you, there were other opinions on the contest as Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: “This tie is far from over for Rangers as Progres made chances and on another night could have gotten a draw easily.

“Even with 10 men, they cut the Ibrox defence open a couple of times and without Ryan Kent, Rangers have much less pace up front.”

Neil MacDonald sent an email having a pop at the result which read: “So the Gerrard revolution stalls with a 2-0 win at home to a pub team in the lower league European tournament.

“Even the die-hard bluenoses know the baw is burst as Celtic with half a team move slowly into overdrive. I will be gutted if we don’t do at least 15 in a row.”

Michael Sheerin was another Celtic fan who got in touch to discuss the situation with his club’s recruitment.

Four signings have arrived, but the Liverpool-based supporter said: “I’m disappointed we have missed out on Romaine Sawyers who looks to be going to West Brom as I’d not mind Olivier Ntcham being sold. I’m also not convinced by Boli Bolingoli.

“He could cost Neil Lennon and we are going to need another left-back, especially as this Kieran Tierney to Arsenal situation isn’t going away.”

Away from the Old Firm, Jim McClean, Isle of Bute, made contact to outline his concerns for the current position at Kilmarnock.

He said: “I am just one of many worried Killie supporters wondering what is going on at Rugby Park.

“The season starts next Saturday and even after the debacle against the Welsh team, we now have more resignations in the board, we have lost about eight players from last season and only signed three.

“There are also rumours which are not good as the manager seems to have lost the dressing room. He will have to go. Forget about giving him a chance.”

Ronald Swan sent an email from Lochee with his worries about Dundee United and said: “I saw a statement from Tony Ashgar regarding the negativity towards Robbie Neilson and his team, but what does he expect?

“I think this is the beginning of the end for Robbie and good riddance I say. Oh, and please sign a keeper.”
