Rangers' tax bill slashed by more than £5m as firm continues fight against HMRC

The firm which owned Rangers has had its tax bill slashed again - this time by more than £5 million.

A report, released today, by liquidators BDO shows a HMRC bill has dropped from an estimated £94m to around £67m.

In a previous report it was revealed the taxman's decision to drop penalties which totalled £24m.

That charge related to Oldco 's use of Employee Benefit Trusts (EBTs) which was used to pay staff at the club between 2001 and 2010.

The £5.2m drop this time relates to Value Added Tax (VAT), Pay as you Earn (PAYE) and National Insurance (NI) prior to the administration.

According to the report, it states the current position in respect of the elements of the HMRC claim is, EBT £48.8m, small tax claim (admitted) £3m, small tax claim (held) £1m, Other pre-appointment VAT , PAYE and NI (admitted) £13.3m, inheritance tax claim (held) £1.2m.

BDO's report states: "Following a further review of the remaining parts of HMRC’s claim, the element that related to arrears of VAT, PAYE and national insurance in the period prior to the commencement of the administration was reduced by £5.2m.

"The EBT claim of £48.9m is presently held, as there is still a dispute with HMRC regarding the basis on which the claim has been calculated.

"The Joint Liquidators and their tax specialists remain in a dialogue with HMRC with a view to seeking to resolve the remaining issues."

The current Rangers is not involved in the tax claim and is not liable for any back-tax claim.

It involves the way several players at the club were paid between 2001 and 2010 by the firm that formerly owner Rangers, and the tax that wasn't paid on income.
