Rangers suffer 'name from the past' jibe as Antwerp tipped for a Europa League shock

Ex-Aston Villa star Gilles de Bilde claims Antwerp shouldn't fear Rangers because "they are a name from the past."

Steven Gerrard's side will face Antwerp in the Last 32 of the Europa League, with the Belgians currently struggling in seventh place in their league, compared with the Ibrox side's blistering start to the season.

Rangers side will be strong favourites to progress, but de Bilde - who won 25 caps for Belgium and played for Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and Anderlecht and is now a TV pundit in his homeland - reckons Antwerp have nothing to be afraid of.

He said: "Glasgow Rangers may be a big name in European football, but above all, they are a name from the past.

"The Scottish Premiership is a lot less strong than the English league and it's only in recent years have they really come back.

"It's a pity for Antwerp the first leg is at home because if Rangers score an away goal, it can be difficult."

However, Antwerp captain Faris Haroun is far warier about the prospect of playing the Scots.

He said: "We are certainly not the favourites, but we have a chance.

"It's a good draw for us. Rangers are a team with a great history and it's not going to be easy.

"We have to respect them because they have a big lead in the Scottish league and they are an excellent team."

"But our chances are better than if we were drawn against a really top club.

"We will have a plan against them and if we play to our best, we have a hope of qualifying."
