Rangers suffer four doses of woodwork pain as they go down swinging in Ajax UEFA Youth League loss

Rangers hit the crossbar and post four times in a 2-1 defeat against Ajax in the first game of their UEFA Youth League campaign.

It was a tough start for the Light Blues who found themselves one goal down in the first 12 from a Skye Vink effort after a Dutch cross into the away area. Ajax were two to the good before half-time through Stanis Idumbo-Muzambo, a twist of fate which proved painful for Rangers after Connor Allan had crashed a header off the crossbar moments beforehand.

They weren't down and out despite finding themselves up against it versus a club known for producing high-profile talents through their youth academy. Lewis MacKinnon pulled one back before heading onto the post and Charlie Lindsay had the chance to level up proceedings from the penalty spot, but it painfully hit the frame. Ross McCausland also suffered woodwork pain, a powerful effort from outside the box cracking the crossbar for a second time.

Zak Lovelace then sent a half-volley wide and Bailey Rice had a free-kick denied as attempts to find a leveller proved in vain. Rangers will also take on Italian side Napoli and English giants Liverpool in Group A.

It mirrors the senior Champions League section the Light Blues are in, with Ajax their opponents in Amsterdam tonight.

There they will face a reunion with former defender Calvin Bassey, who left Ibrox for Holland during the summer transfer window.
