Rangers suffer double Celtic clash injury blow but derby rookie set for debut

Steven Gerrard faces a major defensive dilemma as Rangers host Celtic on Sunday as Filip Helander and Leon Balogun miss out through injury.

The Swede limped off with a knee injury during their Scottish Cup exit to St Johnstone but has been unable to recover in time for the visit of the Hoops.

Balogun, meanwhile, is also ruled out leaving Gerrard with a huge selection headache at the centre-half position for derby day.

Scott Arfield is another injury concern who has been unable to recover from his ankle problem.

The Rangers boss said: "Filip Helander and Scott Arfield are likely missing for the remainder of the season."

Nikola Katic is still sidelined with a long-term injury, meaning Jack Simpson will make his Old Firm debut.

The January signing from Bournemouth replaced Helander against the Perth side and has been used sparingly since arriving at Ibrox.

Scott Wright has put himself in contention to replace Arfield after breaking his Light Blues duck in the first game of their double header against Saints.

Gerrard has urged his players to respond to their cup exit as use the carrot of an unbeaten season as motivation against Celtic.

He added: "The unique challenge after winning the title early is to keep motivated until the end - we still have records we are pushing for.

"An Old Firm always helps get the players in the zone, it doesn't matter when it falls, we want to win and get as many points as we can and go the whole season unbeaten.

"Football is a journey of highs and lows and you have to bounce back as quickly as you can. I'm sure the players are feeling the same as me but the best way is to react and respond in the next game, which is a big game for us.

"For me, it is always about the players. When we first arrived going in against Celtic was tough due to confidence but in all the battles since then we have had really good results. It does feel different now and we have players who believe at our best we can beat anyone."
