Rangers rocked by Covid blow after positive tests hit squad ahead of Alashkert and Celtic showdowns

Rangers have been rocked by a Covid blow as they prepare for the biggest two games of the season so far.

The Ibrox club confirmed they have received positive tests - and it is understood at least two - over the past 48 hours as Steven Gerrard gears up his side for a Europa League playoff second leg against Alashkert tomorrow as well as the first Old Firm showdown of the season on Sunday.

And there are concerns that MORE of Gerrard’s squad could be ruled out as close contacts by health experts investigating social distancing protocol and travel manifests, which is likely to include the long trip north to face Ross County in Dingwall on Sunday.

It’s unclear at this stage how many players could be affected but the news will throw a huge spanner in the works for Gerrard as the manager looks for two huge results.

Gers said in a statement: "Rangers confirm that during our testing schedule, we have received positive Covid-19 tests.

"Those identified as positive are now in self isolation along with 'close contacts'.

"We have followed best practice in our procedures and protocols. From the outset of the pandemic, Rangers has worked closely with the Scottish Government and Scottish football to ensure the health of our staff is protected at all times. We will continue to do so. "

But Gerrard will also have one eye fixed on the visit of his city Celtic rivals this weekend and – with the 10-day self isolation rule still in place – he looks set to have his options limited.
