Rangers stunning European improvement brings tangible ranking reward as Celtic slump laid bare

Rangers have shot up a table of all top-flight European clubs - and are on the verge of equalling the performance of the club's European heroes.

The Ibrox side have overtaken the likes of Werder Bremen and Burnley to take 55th spot in the Euro Club Index - a league table calculated to show the relative strength of any team in one of Europe's top leagues.

The Amsterdam-based initiative is updated weekly, with a number calculated for every team based on results domestically and in Europe.

Rangers aren't far off their highest-ever place in the table - 42nd - which was posted shortly before the 2008 UEFA Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg.

And they have climbed almost 200 places since the arrival of Steven Gerrard in summer 2018.

Celtic meanwhile are 82nd in the table, nestled between Augsburg of Germany and Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv.

That represents a drop of 23 places since just the start of November as the Parkhead club continue to decline under Neil Lennon.

Rangers will have the chance to boost their ranking further in the last 32 of the Europa League and the gap is likely to get even wider between the two Glasgow giants.
