Rangers striker to stand trial accused of speeding in Lanarkshire

A Rangers striker will stand trial next year accused of speeding.

Jermain Defoe, 39, will appear at Glasgow's Justice of the Peace court to face the single charge in June.

Prosecutors state Defoe, of Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, drove a black Range Rover Sport at 56 miles per hour in a 30 zone.

The alleged offence is said to have taken place on December 28, 2020 n the A730, Mill Street between Millburn Avenue and Mill Court in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire.

Darren Fleming, defending, told the court: "He pleads not guilty and we wish to fix the usual diets.

"Can his attendance be excused as he is in employment?"

Justice of the peace Colin Marchment replied: "The difficulty is he hasn't been here at all - I have sat three times."

Mr Marchment fixed a hearing in May in which Defoe is excused from appearing.

But, he has ordained the former England international to appear for the trial date.
