Rangers striker Jermain Defoe believed to have donated £5,000 to help save Wigan Athletic

Jermain Defoe is believed to be responsible for a £5,000 donation to an appeal aiming to save Wigan Athletic.

The English Championship side side entered administration in July, and a 'Save our Club' Crowdfunder campaign has been set up as fans aim to raise at least £500,000.

Rangers striker Defoe was contacted on Twitter by @elbalson, who sent him a link to the crowdfunder and tweeted: "Ere @IAmJermainDefoe, can I be cheeky as f*** and ask you to throw £5000 in here, one for each of those five goals you scored against Latics in the 9-1 defeat at Tottenham?

"I think it's the least you could do mate. Thanks in advance."

14 hours later, he shared a screenshot showing a donation for that amount from a donor who wished to remain anonymous.

As reported in Wigan Today, Latics fans hope the appeal will enable them to part-own the club or provide them with a safety net if they are unable to secure a buyer.

Defoe's five-goal haul for Spurs came in November 2009. He joined Rangers in January 2019, and has scored 25 goals in 52 games for Steven Gerrard's side.
