Rangers' Steven Gerrard winning manager of the year is wrong, says Saints ace

St Johnstone star Craig Bryson says Rangers' Steven Gerrard was wrong to win the manager of the year award over Callum Davidson.

Bryson says taking the Perth club to two cup finals and a spot in Europe next season has been an incredible return for Davidson in his first season at McDiarmid Park.

Davidson has already won the Betfred Cup and takes his side into the Scottish Cup final against Hibs on Saturday, looking to scoop an incredible domestic trophy double.

Bryson says that should have earned Davidson the top gong, and adds that if Saints teammate Ali McCann played for Rangers or Celtic he would have been young player of the year.

The 34-year-old former Clyde star said: "In Scotland, football is dominated by the Old Firm, but at the start of the season, if you were to say that St Johnstone would finish fifth, they'd qualify for Europe, and let's just say we won the Scottish Cup and the Betfred Cup, how can he not be manager of the year? I just don't understand that.

"I don't want to downplay what Rangers have done, because they've been incredible this year.

"They've obviously gone unbeaten in the league and won that at a stroll really, with 102 points, but if you look at the budget, squads and all that stuff... in Callum Davidson's first year of management he got St Johnstone to two cup finals and qualified them for Europe.

"I think at the start of the season if somebody had said that they would probably think you were being stupid; but everybody would have gone 'well if that happens he's definitely manager of the year'.

"It's a wee bit similar to Ali McCann; if he was producing the performances that he does for St Johnstone for Celtic or Rangers then in my opinion he would have won young player of the year - but that's the kind of thing you need to deal with in Scotland, that everything is dominated by the Old Firm."

East Kilbride man Bryson's performances for St Johnstone this season have led to him signing a one-year extension, and says he's happy to be able to repay some of the faith shown in him by Davidson.

Bryson signed for Saints just a week after leaving Aberdeen and says he felt wanted by Davidson from the start, so is delighted to be staying on at McDiarmid Park.

He said: "The new deal is good, it's obviously nice when a club wants you, and the manager wants me.

"It's kind of like a wee bit of payback for the manager; when I left Aberdeen I had been out injured for about 12 to 18 months or so, give or take.

"I don't want to say he took a chance on me, because I've had a decent career and played a lot of games, but there were a lot of managers who said I had been injured for too long, they're not interested.

"But basically as soon as I left Aberdeen the manager was on the phone and wanted me to come up to St Johnstone.

"They gave me a good bit of time to get fit, and it has paid dividends now.

"Since I've been here I've been available for every game, so we're doing something right, and it's payback to St Johnstone for giving me that platform again to continue my career."
