Rangers step up Champions League signing push as they head to key transfer summit

Premiership champions Rangers were in attendance during a key transfer summit alongside a host of Euro heavyweights in the search for a signing edge.

Sporting director Ross Wilson has been heralded for his forward thinking approach and that has led to the Ibrox side becoming regular participant's at Transferroom 's virtual summit with the latest taking place on Wednesday.

Record Sport understands representatives of Motherwell and Hibs were also present at the conference which has been labelled "the speed dating of football" with 200 teams logging in for the remote session this week.

The events allow decisions makers from teams across the globe to meet up and talk transfers as well as forging relationships during their pre-arranged 12-minute meetings.

European football heavyweights Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona and Juventus are regular attendees of the events which were held in-person before the pandemic hit.

Wilson and Steven Gerrard are on the search for the right players as they gear up for their pivotal Champions League qualifiers.

Rangers are desperate to end their 11-year absence from European football's top table as they get the chance to plot a route to the group stage through the champions playoff route.

Rangers have already added Oostende forward Fashion Sakala and Jermain Defoe has penned fresh terms to remain at Ibrox.

But the club noted at their AGM last year that they would be putting their player trading model into effect and that is likely to see key players move on in the coming years.

The likes of Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Borna Barisic have received significant interest in recent seasons but Gerrard is keen to remain strong ahead of a mammoth season.

Former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli and Santos Laguna chairman Alejandro Irarragorri Gutierrez were the keynote speakers as they discussed the changing landscape of football and how clubs can adapt.

Comolli - now with Toulouse - spoke about his experiences with Tottenham and at Anfield and the importance of using data to enhance his decision making process.
