Rangers starlet fends off English interest as he signs new deal

Rangers star Alex Lowry has signed a three-year contract extension after the Ibrox club repotedly fended off interest from the likes of Manchester City and Newcastle United.

The 18-year-old from Uddingston made his first team debut in January in a Scottish Cup win over Stirling Albion and has been a standout performer for the club's B team in the Lowland League this term as well.

His performances have seen him called into the first-team squad on a regular basis since, with four appearances made.

He has also been on the bench as Rangers enjoyed Scottish Cup semi-final success over Celtic recently and during the club's incredible run to the Europa League final in Seville later this month.

Now the midfielder - who had been linked with sides down south - has been rewarded by boss Gio van Bronckhorst with a three-year extenstion, keeping him in Govan until 2025.

Speaking after signing his new deal, a delighted Lowry told the Rangers website: “I want to thank Ross Wilson, Craig Mulholland and the boss for giving me the chance and for showing faith in me.

“I can only thank them and hopefully I can repay them by kicking on now and getting more and more games and good performances under my belt for this great club.”

Sporting Director, Ross Wilson, added: “Alex has progressed really well across the season and we are pleased to have rewarded his development with this contract extension.

“Alex is part of an exciting group of young players who we have progressed to the first-team group from the Academy.

“He has already shown our fans moments of what he can do and we are sure there will be more of them to enjoy in the future as he continues to work hard on all aspect of his development.
