Rangers star Steven Davis gets glowing cap record tribute from the man he's set to surpass

Peter Shilton hopes Steven Davis can smash his international caps record - and celebrate by realising his World Cup dream.

The England legend has congratulated Rangers midfielder Davis as he stands on the brink of equalling his British international appearance tally.

Davis will match the goalkeeper’s 125 caps in Northern Ireland’s World Cup qualifier in Italy on Thursday.

The 36-year-old, who helped Rangers end a decade-long wait to win the top flight title earlier this month, last week revealed he still harbours dreams of leading his country out at Qatar 2022.

And Shilton said: "I'd like to congratulate Steven very much.

"For a midfielder in particular to be able to break my record would be a great achievement and is a testament to his fitness and attitude towards wanting to play.

"You can get to a point in football where you think 'I have just about had enough now’. But he obviously has that determination to keep going.

"I'm sure he could go on and win many more and hopefully he could finish it off by playing in a World Cup finals.

“I did that at Italia 90 and called it a day after that.

"I think it would be great if he could get there but even so, well done on a brilliant achievement."

Davis signed a new one-year deal with Rangers this week and manager Steven Gerrard lavished praise on the veteran for “continuing to set the standards” at the champions.

Shilton insists that professionalism is the key to his international achievements too.

He told BBC Sport NI: “You need ability to start with, you can't do it without ability.

"Hard work and determination, the love of the game and wanting to play and compete.

"You need all of those things put together, as well as a bit of luck with injuries. Outfield players in particular can pick up injuries that could put you out of action for a long time."
