Rangers star Stephen Kelly bids to catch the eye of Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard with impressive loan spell at Ayr United

Loanee Stephen Kelly is loving life at Ayr United – as he bids to catch the eye of Steven Gerrard.

The Rangers kid bagged his sixth goal of the season as United beat Inverness.

Now the midfielder wants to finish the season at Somerset with a flourish.

Kelly said: “Playing here has been great for me.

"The view was get experience of a full season playing real football. I’m happy to keep doing that here.

“I’ve had the chance to come here and enjoy myself, originally under the old manager and it’s continued under the new boss.

“I’m enjoying a bit of a free role where I can go short or long and get forward.

"I’ve always liked getting on the end of things as a midfielder, so adding as many goals as I can is my aim.”

Kelly was outstanding again as Ayr dominated Caley Thistle. Remarkably, it was their first league win over their rivals in 17 years.

They were on top from the start and Kelly teed up Aaron Drinan for an early chance.

Kelly, Ross Docherty and Alan Forrest all saw shots blocked during a crazy spell of pinball in the Inverness box soon after.

Michael Moffat headed off the bar as Ayr continued to pile forward and when Steven Bell headed wide they looked like ruing their missed chances.

Jordan White had the ball in the net for Caley Thistle just before half-time but his header was chalked off for a foul on keeper Ross Doohan.

Inverness were brighter after the break but it was still Ayr who looked the more likely. Aaron Muirhead had a shot cleared off the line by James Vincent.

Ayr were almost caught out when Charlie Trafford glanced a James Keatings corner against the bar at the other end.

However, they got their goal when Kelly robbed Trafford 25 yards out before running through to slot past Mark Ridgers.

Caley’s Kevin McHattie said: “It was a disappointing day all round. The pitch wasn’t the greatest and didn’t suit the way we wanted to play.

“But you’ve got to play the conditions and we didn’t do that. Fair play to Ayr, they got their goal then sat in and made it difficult for us.”
