Rangers star has no regrets after 'exciting' first season at Gers

Connor Barron will end his first season at Rangers trophyless. But he wouldn't change it for the world.

Most players who make the move to Ibrox, be it from another Scottish club or from another country, do so with the ambition of picking up winners' medals.

It has been another turbulent campaign at Ibrox, with Barron becoming a Gers player at the start of it after moving at the end of his Aberdeen contract.

From a personal standpoint, he has ups and downs. Spells in the team and spells out of it, good runs of form and dips.

However, the 22-year-old has thoroughly enjoyed his first campaign since making the move. Despite the difficulties, he there is no hint of regret and taking the decision to become a Gers player.

Asked if that may be the case, he said: “No, not at all. You learn from them. As a player at my age as well, it's good to take everything in.

“Obviously it's disappointing to not be as successful as I would have liked to have been in my first season and have a few trophies. But you learn a lot and you carry that with you and that's what I've done.

“I pick up a lot as a player every day in training and the standards are a lot higher than what they were in the previous club. So that's one just for example, but there's so many things and it's good as well to have that and to learn.

What Derek McInnes has said to Kilmarnock players ahead of Hearts move

"I've been really excited with my first season,” Barron said. “I think to play as much games as I have and to do what I have done, I've been quite happy with it.

“But it's one that, looking forward, I want to go and do better next season. That's just how I am. I'm hungry for more and we'll go away after the game against Hibs and work on my game to get better again."

On whether playing in the Glasgow goldfish bowl has been more intense than he expected, he went on: “I'm not sure. I get myself in there and I do what I need to do daily and help my team. That's just the way I am as a person and I've just tried to improve as much as I can this season.”

Since Barry Ferguson took the team on a temporary basis, Barron has been able to learn from one of the greats of Scottish football in his position.

He is trying to ensure he picks up as much information as possible from him, along with Neil McCann and Billy Dodds.

“Yeah, Barry's been great with us,” Barron said. “The gaffer, Neil, Doddsy, they've all been brilliant and I've just been like a sponge taking everything in and learning as much as possible. As I say, I don't know what's going to happen and we've just got to go and wait and see.

“[He has helped me] a lot, yeah. All three of them have. They've all been great. Individual sessions after training, little bits after games here and there. As I say, I've just been a sponge taking it all in and it's been great working with them so far.”
