Motherwell right-back Stephen O'Donnell is excited to be competing against for Scotland's right-back slot, according to Rangers star Nathan Patterson.
The 19-year-old is fighting with Motherwell's captain to be picked in Scotland head coach Steve Clarke's XI for Saturday's crucial World Cup 2022 qualifier against Israel.
There has been debate in recent months over whether or not the Rangers full-back should play ahead of O'Donnell, who has been Clarke's first pick at right-back in recent times.
Patterson has three caps for Scotland and 20 appearances at club level with Rangers. He believes competition with the Motherwell captain has benefitted him.
"It's good to have competition in every area of the pitch," the Scotland international told Sky Sports. "I have that at club level and I also have it at international level.
"It's good to have the competition as we push each other every day in training.
"Whoever gets the nod has to go on and do well, and so far we have both managed to do that.
"Each trip you come away and you begin to know the boys a bit more. It's good to come away with them and I am getting to know them better each time I am away.
"The gaffer has belief in me and that gives me confidence to go on and train well. When the gaffer is picking you, it shows that he has belief in you to be part of his team.
"I've had a good few chats with him now. He's a great manager and he gives me a confidence boost."
