Rangers star Alfredo Morelos to miss out on Colombia call up as protocols leave striker grounded

Rangers star Alfredo Morelos is set to miss out on a call from Colombia boss Reinaldo Rueda for next month's South American World Cup qualifiers due to rules around COVID-19 protocols.

New FIFA regulations state clubs are under no requirement to release players when mandatory quarantine periods of five days or more are in place in their home counties.

It means a host of top players will be unavailable for the resumption of CONMEBOL action in March, when Colombia are due to face Brazil in Barranquilla before a trip to play Paraguay in Asuncion.

The likes of Everton pair James Rodriguez and Yerry Mina, Tottenham's Davinson Sanchez, Bournemouth midfielder Jefferson Lerma and Brighton's Steven Alzate are all set to remain in the UK while matches are being played.

That also goes for the Gers star, who will not be in a position to add to his nine caps for his country three years on from his debut.

The 24-year-old's only goal for Colombia came in a friendly win over Peru in 2019 when he netted the winner in Miami.

Rueda, 63, confirmed alternative plans had been made to call up South American-based stars, with Millionarios Cristian Arango and Junior's Miguel Borja likely to lead the line.

Rueda said: "I have been having constant communication with all the players in the UK and they are all aware that of course, I want them in this squad for the start of the World Cup qualifiers.

"Sadly, because of the Covid measures taken by Governments, there is very little we can do about getting them over here for the two matches.

"We all know this is happening and, accordingly, we have made plans to call up other players and that's why we held a camp this month with locally-based players."
