Rangers star Alfredo Morelos must have 'long look in the mirror' warns Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard insists Alfredo Morelos must take "a long look in the mirror" as he warned the Rangers striker he could struggle to win back his place.

The Colombian striker was sent off for the fifth time this season after swinging an arm at Celtic captain Scott Brown and faces a four-game ban.

Morelos had one of those dismissals rescinded earlier this season but Gerrard admits he's been forced to clamp down on his star man's disciplinary issues.

He insisted after Sunday's defeat he would recommend to the Rangers board that Morelos be fined a week's wages, with the money going to travelling support.

Gerrard insists the 22-year-old retains his full backing had accepted his punishment.

Gerrard said: "Alfredo trained yesterday. We draw a line under it and wait now for him to return to help us.

"He has shown remorse and accepted the punishment I have given him.

"We spoke to his representation as well and everyone is on the same page.

"Now it is just a decision for the club to decide where the fine goes to but Alfredo has accepted, shown remorse and apologised.

"I'll continue to support and help Alfredo, he still has a lot to offer this football club but at the weekend I had to be firm and stamp down on it.

"I had similar actions when I was younger, you have to have a long look in the mirror and think about his teammates and supporters have to go through once he leaves the pitch. You have to think of other people."

Rangers ' focus now turns to Wednesday night's clash with Hearts at Ibrox as they look to finish the season on a high.

The weekend defeat leaves Gerrard 's side 13 points behind Celtic and an eight consecutive title looks all-but secured for the Hoops.

The club are braced for winger Ryan Kent being cited by the SFA after he struck Celtic captain Brown towards the end of his side's 2-1 defeat.

But Gerrard chose to focus on the on-loan Liverpool man's performance after he scored a stunning solo goal to bring Rangers back into the game.

Gerrard added: "Ryan Kent was magnificent on Sunday, he was the best player on the pitch in my opinion."
