Rangers star Alfredo Morelos left on the bench as Colombia start Copa America campaign with win

Rangers hero Alfredo Morelos had to settle for a place on the bench as Colombia started their Copa America campaign with a 1-0 win over Ecuador.

The Ibrox striker had missed World Cup qualifiers in recent weeks after testing positive for Covid-19 last month.

And it meant that Reinaldo Rueda decided to go with other options in his strike force and it got them off to the perfect start at the tournament in Brazil.

There's been a controversial build-up to the entire tournament with Covid-19 issues and the tournament being moved from Colombia and Argentina and given to Brazil.

But it didn't have an adverse effect on the Colombian side as they beat Ecuador in Group B, with the only goal of the game coming from Edwin Cardona.

The Tijuana midfielder netted shortly before half time after being set up by Miguel Borja.

Borja was one of two strikers selected up front as he partnered River Plate hitman Rafael Santos Borre in the frontline, while Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata was introduced from the bench in the second half.

The Rangers frontman will hope he will earn a chance during the remaining three group games when they face Venuzuela on Thursday night before taking on Peru on Monday and finally Brazil in 10 days time.
