Rangers star Alfredo Morelos endures Colombia frustration as critics are left unimpressed

Alfredo Morelos started for Colombia in last night's friendly with Algeria - but it was a frustrating night for the Rangers striker.

Carlos Queiroz's team were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Algeria with Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez scoring twice.

The Ibrox hero was substituted after 70 minutes of his fourth cap and didn't impress the media in his homeland either in this game or his previous outing against Chile.

The Colombian edition of AS noted that Morelos had a chance after three minutes which he couldn't take. But "he had little involvement in the second half and was replaced by Ibargüen after 70 minutes".

The same outlet noted: " Alfredo Morelos couldn't score in the 137 minutes he had in the international break. The striker played too deep to help the attack."

In an article about the three players from whom they expected more in the national team, Antena 2 picked out Morelos.

They wrote: "A goalscorer and a big figure in a lot of matches with Rangers, the striker born in Cereté hasn't been able to show his true strength with the Colombian national team, despite having had several opportunities.

"He doesn't make his presence felt in the opposition box like Falcao or (Duvan) Zapata, and when he's had chances he hasn't been able to take them in the way that's expected.

"So, for now, he's not a player who can take on tasks like being the lone striker in the Colombian national team."

In their ratings El Colombiano gave Morelos two stars out of five, writing: "he had a couple of opportunities which could have changed the match, but his aim was off".

Giving him a rating of four for the match, El Tiempo wrote: "He hasn't yet responded to the confidence of the coach. He only had one shot, from the edge of the box, in the first half."

Colombia hadn't gone two games in an international break without a goal for over 10 years, and Diario Gol was not impressed.

According to the website the match showed: "A failed experiment in several areas of the field... for all the desire that the different strikers showed (Alfredo Morelos, Luis Fernando Muriel, Roger Martínez, Luis Sinisterra, Luis Díaz and Andrés Ibargüen) it's not enough to remedy the biggest flaw in this team - goals.

"While the responsibility of replacing Duván Zapata, injured in the game against Chile, was not an easy task, good movement and hard work were not enough to fulfil the most important task for a striker - to score."

Despite his excellent goalscoring record for Rangers, Morelos is yet to score for Colombia at Under-17, Under-20 or senior level.
