Rangers slapped with UEFA fine but Steven Gerrard in the clear for late Benfica kick off

Rangers have been fined €10,000 after their match against Benfica kicked off late but manager Steven Gerrard is in the clear.

The Europa League group game at Ibrox failed to get under way as scheduled, bringing a charge from the governing body.

Gerrard had been in the dock for the delay but UEFA has confirmed that he will not face any punishment.

Instead Rangers will have to stump up £9,000 for breaching article 11 of the competition rules.

They have 90 days to make payment but proceedings have been closed against Gerrard.

The club have also been given the responsibility to ensure "that its coach is personally informed of this decision".

The match saw Rangers take a 2-0 lead against the Portuguese giants before eventually being pegged back for a 2-2 draw.

That still gives them the advantage in the head-to-head between the two sides though going into the final game thanks to a 3-3 draw in Lisbon.

Both Rangers and Benfica have already qualified and the Premiership leaders will take top spot if they match or better the result Jorge Jesus' side get on the final day.

The Portuguese are away at Standard Liege while Gerrard's side travel to Poland to face Lech Poznan.
