Rangers slammed over Ianis Hagi as Romanian legend attacks hardball Olympic stance

Romanian managerial legend Mircea Lucescu has slammed Rangers in a blast at clubs who are refusing to release their players for the Olympics.

The Scottish champions are reportedly snubbing a request from Ianis Hagi's national team for him to travel to Tokyo for the Games as it comes at a crucial time in the season with Champions League qualifiers.

Rangers are under no obligation from FIFA to release Hagi but Dynamo Kiev gaffer Lucescu hit out at clubs who are standing in their players' way of competing at Romania's first Olympic football tournament for 57 years.

Rangers, along with Cagliari, Slavia Prague and Inter Milan have reportedly informed the Romanians they won't release Hagi, Razvan Marin, Nicolae Stanciu and Ionut Radu.

However, 75-year-old former Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Romania and Turkey boss Lucescu believes the clubs should be ashamed of themselves for preventing their players to go.

He said: "It is completely unacceptable for clubs to refuse to allow Romanian players to compete at the Olympic Games.

"Do they not understand participation in the Olympic Games raises the value of the players? It's really disgraceful.

"I have 11 players at Dynamo Kiev who are in the national team of Ukraine. It's something extraordinary and I am very proud they are able to play for their country."

Romania, who are in their first football tournament at the Olympics since 1964, are still hoping to persuade Rangers and the other clubs to release their players, but it looks highly unlikely Steven Gerrard's side will allow that with the squad already depleted by the Euro suspensions of Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe.
