Rangers slam Celtic fan for 'abhorrent' Ibrox disaster taunt

Rangers have branded the actions of a Celtic fan as 'abhorrent' after a man was seen mocking the Ibrox disaster.

During yesterday's derby match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox, which finished 1-1 with goals scored by Cyriel Dessers and Adam Idah, footage widely shared on social media showed a man holding a mobile phone in the air with the number 66 visible on the screen.

This symbolises the number of Rangers fans who died in the Ibrox disaster after a stadium crush at a derby game with Celtic on January 2, 1971.

The Hoops fan was then seen showing the number six twice with his fingers.

Police Scotland have launched an investigation into the disgraceful online footage.

A Rangers spokesperson said: “The Ibrox disaster remains the darkest day in our club’s history and continues to affect a number of families to this day.

“The mocking and celebration of any tragedy is abhorrent, and has no place in any football stadium or society as a whole.”

Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed the force's involvement, adding: “We are aware of the incident and enquiries are ongoing.”

It's reported Celtic will investigate the incident too.
