Rangers skipper James Tavernier responds to Motherwell incident with Twitter pun

James Tavernier has brushed off an unsavoury incident at Motherwell after the Rangers captain was targeted with missiles.

A cigarette lighter and then a pie were launched at the full-back during his side's 3-0 win at Fir Park earlier on Sunday.

It's the second time this season Tavernier has been on the receiving end from rival supporters after he was confronted by a Hibs fan at Easter Road in March.

But the latest incident doesn't appear to have fazed the Englishman as he responded with a Twitter pun.

Posting a picture of the moment the pie was hurled onto the pitch, Tavernier simply wrote "Pied" with a fishing hook emoji.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard hit out at the latest incident to blight Scottish football this season and insists he's fed up having to talk about it.

"It's a sad thing to see in this league but there's a lot of it going on and there's a lot of other sad stuff that's going on in world football," he said.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard sick and tired of yobs shaming Scottish football

"It seems like we're trying to send messages out every time we speak to the media, which is a shame.

"It's dangerous for the players when there are objects thrown on to the pitch, whether it be a lighter or whatever it may be. It needs to stop."
