Rangers sink Celtic B again as Ange Postecoglou watches Cole McKinnon make the difference

It was glory for Rangers B as they defeated great rivals Celtic for the second time in a month.

The Ibrox men dominated the first half and weathered a storm after the break before Cole McKinnon's header settled a competitive Lowland League encounter.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou was among the interested spectators at Parkhead, as home supporters made plenty of noise on a night when it never stopped raining.

Rangers will now fancy their chances of leapfrogging their rivals in the final weeks of the season with a game in hand.

If the visitors were feeling any ill effects from the sobering defeat to Stirling Uni at the weekend it wasn't on show during the opening exchanges.

There was a slickness to David McCallum's side and they carved out the first big chance as Tony Weston raced through on goal.

But the free-scoring former Blackpool forward - a player many believe is ready for the first team - seized upon a slack back pass but his lofted effort cleared Tobi Oluwayemi's crossbar.

If there was any doubt this was a clash between two great rivals, that was certainly removed when Lewis Budinauckas wiped out Johnny Kenny.

The booking for Rangers keeper seemed the right call but punters inside Parkhead called for a harsher punishment. The referee appeared to get it right by issuing a yellow card.

But it was his counterpart Oluwayemi who was the busier of the two during the first period over a competitive Lowland League encounter.

Celtic bared their teeth after the restart and Charlie McCann accepted a caution for a cynical foul that extinguished a promising counter attack for the hosts. Owen Moffat then followed into the book for a tackle on Ross McCausland.

The surface was slick and the home fans made plenty of noise but both teams proved adept at keeping the other at bay admirably for long spells under the lights.

Celtic were starting to find openings and Rocco Vata forced Budinauckas into a smart save to keep the game all square.

And that momentum was building as Moffat jinked and weaved but was left annoyed with himself as his effort on goal cleared the crossbar.

But Celtic's good vibes were soon quashed as McKinnon silenced the home fans with an inch-perfect header.

And Rangers sensed the opportunity for more goals but Weston was denied by the offside flag he spotted before he curled an effort at the back post.

Vata was the brightest light for Celtic and his teasing cross into the box was scrambled clear by a resolute backline which earned a hearty applause from B team boss McCallum.

Celtic thought they were level but the brilliant Budinauckas denied sub Adam Brooks' great effort to repel the charging hosts.

And that proved to be the best chance as Rangers held on to secure a vital win in their quest to finish best of the rest behind Bonnyrigg Rose.
