Rangers showcase Orange County partnership as Ross Wilson agrees loan moves for academy duo

Rangers youngsters Danny Finlayson and Matthew Shiels are set for loan spells with Orange County.

The Light Blues announced a tie up with the American side, who are part of the USL set-up, back in November.

Northern Ireland under-21 cap Finlayson and Scotland under-19 international Shiels will become the first Ibrox players to head Stateside as part of the strategic arrangement between the two clubs.

Rangers director of football Ross Wilson believes both teenage defenders will benefit from playing first team football with the Irvine-based side.

Finlayson, 18, is a right-back while Shiels is a year older and mainly plays as a left-back.

Meanwhile, former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan says  Greg Docherty  "looks desperate" amid reports he's holding out for a loan move to the English Championship.

The  Rangers  midfielder spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury, and was named the club's player of the year.

He returned to Ibrox in the summer but has featured only five times, with no appearances in the  Premiership  and no games for the first team since August.

Docherty is expected to go out on loan this month but it's been reported that he's refusing another move to League One as he wants to play in the league above.

But Whelan said: “If someone wants a Championship club and no Championship clubs come in for you, it looks desperate.

“That’s the thing, you can’t sell yourself, you sell yourself with your performances and if you’re good enough, you don’t need to put yourself out there, clubs will be coming in.

“If there are no clubs, no offers on the table, then you haven’t done enough, simple as that.

“It doesn’t make any difference that you’ve been at Shrewsbury, that’s not Championship football.
