Rangers SFA charge confusion cleared up after Michael Beale and Tom Culshaw see red

Rangers coaches Michael Beale and Tom Culshaw have both been hit with SFA charges following alleged misconduct on the touchline.

The citations were announced by the SFA this afternoon but caused confusion among some fans as both had been shown red cards on the touchline.

If a player is shown a red card by the referee he or she incurs an automatic suspension, unless they successfully appeal against the sending off.

In this case the SFA has handed down citations to the Rangers staff following games against Hibs and Celtic .

Culshaw was shown a red card at Easter Road after a fiery clash between the two benches, while Beale was dismissed in the wake of Alfredo Morelos ' red card in the win at Celtic Park.

So, are the two coaches being charged by the compliance officer on a double jeopardy basis, having already been shown red card?

In short, no.

Under law 12 of the IFAB rules a yellow or red card can be shown to coaching staff, with red card offences including "entering the opposing technical area in an aggressive or confrontational manner" or "confronting a match official".

However, unlike for players the red card doesn't incur an automatic suspension.

Instead the punishment is simply to be sent from the touchline, with the governing body then deciding if the offence committed merits further sanction.

In this case the SFA have decided that Beale and Culshaw have a case to answer for their actions.
