Bologna have firmly told Rangers to back off from pursuing Lewis Ferguson, with the former Aberdeen star considered "fundamental" to the Serie A club's plans.

Despite a season hampered by a cruciate ligament injury, Ferguson played a crucial role in Bologna's Coppa Italia win and their fifth-place league finish, which secured Champions League qualification.

However, Bologna appear determined to keep their captain. Andrea Tarozzi, Bologna's assistant, said, "This is more of a question for the coach, but I can tell you that Ferguson is a very important player for us.

"I can write that in capital letters. He's a fundamental element. We know his importance to Bologna after what he's done in recent years.

"I'm sure the coach will find the best position for him to showcase his qualities."

Ferguson’s evident impact in Italy means Rangers could face stiff resistance in their quest to bring him back to Scotland this summer.
