Rangers sent Standard Liege warning as ex-Liverpool star Simon Mignolet pinpoints pressing power play

Simon Mignolet has hailed Rangers' Europa League rivals Standard Liege as the hardest-working team he's faced this season.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper is back in his homeland with Club Brugge and his side drew 1-1 with Standard on Saturday.

Rangers travel to Belgium to kick off their Europa League group stage campaign and face Standard Liege in front of 7,000 fans at their Stade Maurice Dufrasne home.

Standard have started the season well both in Europe and domestically and have only lost one of the 12 games they've played - against Leuven in the league.

They earned a draw against Belgian champions and league leaders Club Brugge at the weekend, who have former Anfield shotstopper Mignolet as their keeper after his £6.5 million move back to his homeland from the English Premier League champions last year.

And he admitted he was hugely impressed with Standard Liege under manager Philippe Montanier.

He said: "We made mistakes in the game and it was all because of the pressing of Standard. They did it really well.

"Standard have a very good team. They worked so hard all over the pitch and pressed us for a full 90 minutes.

"For me, I would say they are the best team we have played this year.

"We knew Standard was going to be tough and we would have settled for a draw before the match. But we didn't realise just how hard it would be.

"They are a team who have improved a lot and they are extremely difficult to play against because they force you into errors.

"There was a lot of controversy with various refereeing decisions, but I have to admit Standard deserved a draw at least."
