Rangers secure 9 rising academy talents as Craig Mulholland salutes the next generation

Rangers have announced the signing of nine youth team players to professional contracts.

The Gers won the prestigious Alkass youth cup in 2019, and eight of that team have now officially joined the academy.

Rangers have handed pro deals to goalkeeper Jack McConnell, defenders Jack Harkness, Harley Ewen and Kelsey Ewen, midfielders Mackenzie Strachan, Darren McInally, Connor Allan and Leyton Dunlop and forward Robbie Ure.

Seven of the players signed have already represented Scotland at youth level.

Academy chief Craig Mulholland said: "We are delighted to welcome all of these young, talented men into our professional academy having progressed through the schoolboy programme.

“The numbers are slightly higher than our normal intake which is representative of the quality of this group, the number of internationals it contains, the demand elsewhere for their signatures and the potential we believe these lads have.

"Obtaining a contract at Rangers is no easy task and joining a club like this, with the education programme that now awaits them, is something they must celebrate, relish and embrace – it is a fabulous achievement, with lots of hard work ahead."

The signing of nine youth players to professional contracts will be welcome news for Rangers.

Steven Gerrard's Europa League had to be limited to just 22 players for the 2019-20 campaign due to a lack of club trained players.

UEFA requires four club trained players in the 25 man squad and Allan McGregor was the only Gers player to qualify.
