Rangers season failure blasted as 'nonsense' but Ibrox hero fires Celtic wake up call warning

Rangers have now failed to win eight of the nine domestic trophies on offer during Steven Gerrard ’s three year reign at Ibrox.

And club hero David Robertson is adamant the Liverpool legend will be well aware of the failings and the need to change that record.

The former Nine In A Row full-back also insists Sunday’s dramatic Scottish Cup exit to St Johnstone should serve as a warning Gerrard’s side remain well short of being invincible.

A dramatic penalty shoot-out loss to the Perth men brought the Light Blues crashing down back to earth but Robertson is adamant stopping Celtic from claiming 10 In A Row with their Premiership triumph has already made this campaign a success story.

He said: “There will be disappointment and when you increase expectation in football and fall short then there will be some who will see the lack of a Double as a failure.

“That’s nonsense, this Rangers team have their names pride of place in the history books as the side which stopped Celtic reaching ten-in-a-row. It’s going to be a long, long time if ever that any team gets that opportunity again.

“Being knocked out of the Cup will also provide a bit of a reality check. They’ve had all the praise going this season and rightly so, all of the claims that Rangers are back as a dominant force is still premature.

"They’ve been brilliant this season but I’m sure Celtic will come back stronger next term. It’s a wake-up call to Rangers – they are not quite back to their best just yet.”

Saints keeper Zander Clark’s last gasp extra-time leveller was a rare moment of the surreal which Robertson admits caught Rangers on the hop.

He said: “It was a bizarre moment and Gerrard will be unhappy with the marking but when a keeper comes up for a corner, who picks him up? Clark’s presence caused confusion and he was left spare, even the different colour of jersey inside the box causes a bit of chaos but he buried the header brilliantly.”
