Rangers rubbish claims Celtic to be paid more for Sydney Super Cup showdown

Rangers have dismissed claims that Celtic will be paid more for their controversial trip Down Under in November.

Billed as Ange Postecoglou’s Australia homecoming, there is huge interest in the former Socceroos boos taking the Hoops to Sydney.

However, despite having an Aussie at the helm the Scottish Premiership champions have shot down rumours that the Parkhead side will be weighed in more.

A spokesman for the Ibrox club said: “This is factually inaccurate. Both Old Firm clubs will receive the same fee and overall payment.”

Rangers have received a backlash from fans over their participation in the inaugural Sydney Super Cup which takes place during the top flight’s winter break while the World Cup is on in Qatar.

The Light Blues will take on their arch rivals in one of two friendlies and commercial chief James Bisgrove admitted it was hugely lucrative with an estimated £2million-£3 million on offer.

He said: “It’s of a sizeable benefit to the club from a commercial perspective, to an extent we’ve never had an offer of this level for two friendly games.

"To put some context around this, we’ve spoken before and Stewart Robertson has spoken before about the broadcast and media values here in Scotland and the club’s view on that has been well documented.

“The participation in this event over eight days will benefit the club to the same level as an entire season in the SPFL for two friendly games."
