Rangers rout can't happen again says Motherwell boss as he admits 'I left us open'

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander has vowed to ensure a defeat like last weekend's to Rangers at Fir Park doesn't occur again under his watch.

The Steelmen lost 6-1 to Steven Gerrard's side in Premiership action last Sunday. After taking the lead through Bevis Mugabi, James Tavernier levelled before half-time and things quickly crumbled.

Alexander's team have conceded at least two goals in their last five matches and three more goals were conceded against Rangers after Stephen O'Donnell's second half red card.

But the 'Well boss kept his side pressing for a way into the game, something he takes on the chin: "I can take the last three goals as we were down to 10 men and I can understand the emotional side of it.

"I could have put six at the back and three in front of that. Call me naive, call me stupid, but I still wanted to have an opportunity to get something from the game.

"So I left us open and I take that. I felt from 1-0, even though we didn't mean to, we sat off them. They only had one chance before they scored - one real chance in 42 minutes. But then we didn't do things well enough after that."

Alexander has urged Motherwell as a collective to bounce back against Aberdeen (SNS Group)

Alexander says his players are hurting after the loss but work has been done to make sure it is a one-off: "It wasn't pretty to watch so I can understand the result and the reaction to it - as it wasn't good enough.

"We take that responsibility strongly. I've spoken often about how hard the players work and how conscious they are of their jobs. But they know they let themselves down last week.

"We can't afford to come off the pitch feeling like that ever again. That's the reality of it."

Motherwell travel to Aberdeen in the Premiership's seventh placed. The Fir Park side have taken one point from the last 15 available.

Alexander added: "We are determined to correct a few things. The boys have trained the way we would expect after a hurtful result like that.

"We have to play how we've trained. It's been a tough week from Sunday onwards, mentally and physically, to digest what happened.

"We've addressed it to make sure it never happens again. We also deal in realism. We understand the result is the main focus and it is for us as well. But we take in the bigger picture and circumstances.

"If we had won on Sunday, we wouldn't be thinking everything is perfect. But when you have a result like that, you have to come up to the solutions to do better. It can't happen again."
