Rangers release Jermain Defoe statement after striker involved in three-car smash

Rangers have confirmed striker Jermain Defoe was involved in a crash involving three cars in Glasgow shortly after playing a part in his side's 5-0 thrashing of Aberdeen at Ibrox.

The English star was pictured at the scene of the smash near the Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow after the incident. He was seen speaking to police officers.

Rangers later released a statement confirming the 36-year-old was okay and that nobody involved in the collision was seriously injured.

The statement from Ibrox said: "Rangers can confirm there was a collision earlier this evening involving striker Jermain Defoe and we are happy and relieved to say that no one was seriously injured."

Police were called to the accident on the north bound exit of the tunnel near to Balshagray Avenue around 6pm.

Two vehicles, including a Range Rover, were left badly damaged after the smash.

An eyewitness told the Scottish Sun: "Defoe and a lady - who looked like she was his girlfriend - were in the Range Rover.

"The BMW M4 sports car was travelling south. It appeared somehow to go through the central reservation and clipped Defoe's car.

"It was absolutely shocking to see. A really awful smash. I thought, 'oh no - someone is bound to be badly hurt here'."

Defoe had come on as a substitute in his side's thumping win over Aberdeen just over an hour earlier.

The striker netted the fourth goal to take his tally to nine for the season.

He will fly out to Switzerland with his team mates next week for the Europa League clash with Young Boys on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were called to reports of a three-car road traffic collision along Balshagray Avenue at 6.05pm.

“Officers remain on the scene. There are no injuries.”
