Rangers have received an apology from Hibernian over comments allegedly made by author Irvine Welsh towards Alfredo Morelos on the Easter Road side’s official online channel during Wednesday’s game.
The 62-year-old Trainspotting writer was reported to have made a series of inflammatory remarks about the 24-year-old following an incident in which he appeared to stamp on Hibs defender Ryan Porteous.
Morelos would go on to net the winner as Rangers moved a step closer to the Scottish Premiership title.
Welsh, appearing on ‘The Match’ as a pundit alongside host David Tanner and Hibs women’s captain Joelle Murray, attracted the ire of Rangers fans on social media, many of whom complained to Ofcom over the incident.
The Ibrox club’s Supporter Liaison Officer has now confirmed an apology was made directly to Rangers, though urged the Scottish football authorities to launch their own probe.
“We are disappointed at the comments made in relation to Alfredo and our club,” read a statement posted on Twitter.
“Hibs have apologised to the club today. Nevertheless, we are sure these comments will be investigated by the football authorities.”
Ofcom reportedly received 14 complaints over the incident, however have no power to act as Hibs TV is not licensed by the watchdog.
The SFA and SPFL have not yet confirmed whether an official investigation will take place, though Hibs could face a hefty fine as a penalty should they be found guilty.
