Rangers quartet battle it out as shortlist revealed for prestigious SFWA Player of the Year prize

Rangers dominate the shortlist for the Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year award with all four of the nominees coming from the champions.

Light Blues skipper James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Steven Davis and goalkeeper Allan McGregor are the quartet in the running to lift this season’s prize.

It means the recipient will come from the Ibrox club for the first time in over a decade with David Weir named the country’s top player by the football writers in 2010.

Old Firm rivals Celtic have had nine of the 10 winners since then with current Parkhead striker Leigh Griffiths the only non-Hoops player to win it during that time after picking up the gong while at Hibs.

Rangers have stormed to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade under Steven Gerrard, also in the running for the SFWA Manager of the Year, this season.

Captain Tavernier has chipped in with an incredible 18 goals from defence while the experience of McGregor and Davis, the only members of the current squad to have previously won major trophies with the club, has been vital and Goldson has been rock-solid in a defence that has conceded just 13 goals in the league all season.

And now all four will battle it out for the most prestigious individual prize and the winner will be announced before the end of the season.
