Rangers prize money scenarios revealed ahead of PSV Champions League showdown

Rangers got the job done last night as they defeated Servette to book their spot in the Champions League qualifying play-off round.

Michael Beale's side will now take on PSV Eindhoven in a two-legged shootout for a spot in the group stages of the competition and the financial gain is a major one.

With Rangers now in the play-off, they are guaranteed a mega payout. Whoever loses in the play-off still receives £3million, as well as a windfall payment for dropping out Europe's elite competition.

That accounts to €8.7million (£7.5million), which is more than double what would be payed out for teams who were knocked out at the third qualifying round stage.

So Rangers have already made a major financial gain by edging past Servette, but if they can go one step further and defeat PSV then they are looking at even more.

Teams who qualify for the group stages are handed €15.6million (£13.4million), and that's before any performance-based prize money is added on for positive results. A draw in the tournament earns €900,000 (£775,000), while every win earns €2.8million (£2.4million).

In total that is an additional total of £14.4million up for grabs before the tournament enters the knockout stages.

If clubs make it to the knockouts they will be rewarded with a further £8.2million.

Meanwhile, Rangers manager Michael Beale praised his side for digging deep and finding the answers in Switzerland after James Tavernier’s equaliser sent them into the Champions League play-offs.

Beale told Rangers TV: “We didn’t do well enough first half, I thought we were passive and obviously they scored and the crowd were up in the stadium.

“We had a wonderful chance ourselves with Dani and obviously he misses and we go in at half-time and had to have a strong conversation.

“We were much better second half, we got the full-backs higher. Borna, a fantastic cross, and Tav, something we have seen for a number of years, it was a wonderful goal.”
