Rangers players rated as Butland keeps score down & Gassama nets consolation

Jack Butland 8

Left utterly helpless by his defence for the opening goal as the ball deflected into the far corner. Came up big to deny Beganovic and Horvat later in the first half, first racing off his line and then springing to his right to parry clear. Beaten by smart Kiteishvili finish for Sturm Graz's second after the defence was carved open once more. Booted the post in frustration. Trio of huge saves in the second period.

James Tavernier 6

Played in practically every position across the backline. Started the night at right-back, then into a back three and finally switched to the left of the defence. Throw in led to slack opener. Improved after the break, showing his versatility and commitment to the cause.

John Souttar 5

Dropped deep for a throw-in in which led to the opener as he was left woefully out of position. Recovered to return to his usual standards defensively, but wasn't as effective in carrying the ball out of defence. Went close with a header then saw a powerful close-range strike expertly turned over the bar.

Derek Cornelius 6

Had to cover for Souttar to deny the opening goal, but didn't. A significant improvement in the second half as he was tasked with driving forward, which he did to great effect. Strong in aerial duels in both boxes. Close to equalising with a low drive which deflected towards the bottom corner before Christensen turned wide. Booked for a lunge.

Jayden Meghoma 5

Part of a struggling back four in the first half. Wasn't alert to intercept the cross for the first goal, and couldn't clear the second as Rangers' very high line was punished. Wasn't involved going forward to any significant success as the left side looked far more dangerous in the second half. Taken off at break as Russell Martin rolled the dice to change the system.

Nico Raskin 7

Rangers' best midfield operator by far. Always wanted the ball and had some incisive passes, particularly in finding Gassama on the left flank. Popped up all over the part as he displayed his engine in midfield. Caused problems in the box for Sturm Graz but was unable to make a telling impact.

Connor Barron 6

Started in midfield with Mohamed Diomande out through red card suspension. Did alright for the 70 minutes he was on the park. Dropped deep to collect the ball, but didn't progress it forward enough. Still improving but not quite at the level to dominate proceedings in the Europa League.

Thelo Aasgaard 5

Clear signs of quality were shown in glimpses, but too often opted for the wrong pass in the final third. Wanted to make an impact with pressing, but passing was wayward as he opted for the more difficult option on occasion over the obvious choice. Subbed off with ten minutes left.

Djeidi Gassama 8

Another inspired display in Europe from the tricky winger. Caused endless problems for the Sturm Graz rearguard whenever he was on the ball. Hammered home shortly after the break and sent numerous inviting deliveries into the box - not helped by his team-mates who couldn't apply the finishing touch.

Oliver Antman 5

Not his best night for Rangers. Too often anonymous for the Ibrox side in a testing first half in Graz. At points, a victim of the overall team performance rather than any glaring individual efforts, but didn't do enough as he was hooked at the break.

Youssef Chermiti 5

Still hasn't truly arrived for Rangers. Favoured as a lone striker over Miovski once more, but didn't justify the decision. Smashed the crossbar with a header after 15 minutes having towered over his marker yards from goal. Two efforts in the second half were tame and easily saved by Christensen. Some neat touches when he drifted out wide, but doesn't look the striking solution in Europe.

Max Aarons (for Meghoma, 45) 5

Drafted into a right wingback role for Rangers as the system was changed at half time. Operated as a winger at times as Rangers desperately searched for a leveller.

Bojan Miovski (for Antman, 45) 5

Made a difference in the second half, even with his presence alone in joining Chermitti in the attack. No real sight of goal.

Joe Rothwell (for Barron, 69) 4

Assured in the middle of the park, if unspectacular.

Mikey Moore (for Cornelius, 79) 3

Thrown on for the final ten minutes, but couldn't make any impact.

Danilo (for Aasgaard, 84) 2

One shot at goal lacked conviction. It was too weak and straight into the arms of the keeper.
