Rangers player ratings vs Napoli as McGregor shows class and Morelos returns

Allan McGregor was the man of the match as a series of penalty decisions went against Rangers at Ibrox.

James Sands was first to be penalised as he was handed his marching orders for a quick-fire second yellow card and in an act of double jeopardy the whistler pointed to the penalty spot for Napoli. Piotr Zieliński's first effort was saved with the rebound turned home but after a VAR check he had to step up again from 12-yards with McGregor once again keeping him out.

The veteran stopper then had to face Matteo Politano from the same positions minute later after Borna Barisic was penalised for handball and he was inches away from making it three penalty saves on the night. Despite the defeat the 40-year-old showed what he is all about and now leaves Giovanni van Bronckhorst with a big decision to make.

Here's how we rated Rangers in their Champions League loss to Napoli at Ibrox.

Allan McGregor - 9

Back in for McLaughlin. Saved two penalties from Zielinski with the first retaken after VAR check. Politano stepped up third time around to net from 12-yards with McGregor inches away from a hat-trick. No chance at second or third goals.

James Tavernier - 6

Skipper had a early chance blocked. Always running forward on the attack and leading by example. Took one for the team with Napoli on the break. Booked. Subbed late on.

Connor Goldson - 6

A key defensive header just shy of the break. Solid shift from the ever-present defender. Stunning cross goal header into a dangerous area but no takers.

James Sands - 4

Partnered Goldson once again in heart of defence. Two quick-fire yellow cards and given marching orders. Banned for next game.

Borna Barisic - 6

Like Tavernier got up and down the park. Caught in possession a number of times when about to deliver the ball to the frustration of the home crowd. Never gave up and worked hard. Penalised for handball that resulted in opening goal.

Steven Davis - 5

Experienced midfielder one of five changes from side that lost in Ajax. Calm and composed figure. Subbed late on.

John Lundstram - 6

Mr Reliable. Full of running and tough tackling. Tracked back so often to clear danger. Hero from Seville run and continues to impress on big stage for Rangers. Booked.

Scott Arfield - 6

Denied from range by a stunning save. Incredible close control to tee up Morelos in final seconds of half but strike fluffed effort.

Ryan Jack - 6

Returned to the starting team as he bids to keep a regular spot. A packed position for Van Bronckhorst but did his chances no harm. Subbed after 63 mins.

Ryan Kent - 7

Looked up for this one. A confident display from the man for the big occasion. Looked much more like himself. Fell away in final stages as Rangers went down to ten.

Alfredo Morelos - 7

A glorious chance 30 seconds into his return. Looked sharp and confident. Rangers team-mates and fans will be delighted he's back. Booked for clattering into Napoli keeper. Subbed with 20 to play.

SUBS

Leon King - 4

More experience for the youngster in the top level of club football.

Rabbi Matondo - 3

Subbed on but never made any impact. Tough task with Rangers down to ten and mostly defending.

Antonio Colak - 3

Late sub. No real sniff.

Glen Kamara - 2

Came on in final stages of narrow defeat.

Malik Tillman - 2

Like Kamara was introduced late on. Too late to make any impression.
