Rangers player ratings v Liverpool as Barisic and Tavernier suffer in Champions League thrashing

Rangers are out of the Champions League with a heavy 7-1 defeat against Liverpool in their fourth Group A fixture.

A raucous Ibrox met the players who marched onto the turf, who were looking to make amends for losing their first three games in this section against Ajax, Napoli and the Reds. They hadn't scored a goal either but that all changed when Scott Arfield slotted home a memorable goal to heap pressure on Jurgen Klopp's side, who have started the Premier League season poorly. They responded promptly though through a Roberto Firmino header off a set-piece routine and it was all red from there.

Firmino put them ahead as he again exposed his opponents on the right and goalkeeper Allan McGregor's botched clearance gifted Darwin Nunez another goal for Liverpool. Mo Salah then added the quickest-ever Champions League hat-trick off the bench with Harvey Elliott also on target. It leaves Rangers bottom of the group on zero points and they are now in a fight for third to drop into the Europa League beyond Christmas. Here is how we rated manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men.

Allan McGregor - 5

Did very little outside pick the ball out of his net. Poor clearance allowed Liverpool to build a quick attack and Nunez finished it off, but even that may have been handled better, and his hand wasn't strong enough for Salah's either.

James Tavernier - 5

Bullied by Firmino for the Liverpool leveller and then almost cost another with a stray pass setting up a counter-attack. Composed himself but then was caught out of position for the striker's second, with his night defined by being left wanting at the key moments.

Ben Davies - 6

A strong showing for the first hour as he showed the kind of performance that convinced Liverpool to buy him from Preston. The defender stepped up to be a leading man upon his teammate's exit effectively but soon the defence collapsed.

Connor Goldson - 6

Was putting in a good shift up against Darwin Nunez but a rare injury struck to leave him visibly gutted. Rangers need that to be short-term.

Borna Barisic - 3

Charged up the line for a hopeful ball and left exposed as Joe Gomez teed up Firmino for a headed goal. Can't make those kind of decisions at this level and expect to go unpunished and beat too easily by Salah on three separate occasions.

John Lundstram - 6

Looked a different man from the one that played at Anfield last week. Ran and ran all night and put in plenty of tackles in the engine room.

Scott Arfield - 7

Cute finish which he won't forget in a hurry. Showed composure on the ball and carried the fight to his opponents with driving runs.

Ryan Jack - 6

Arfield's goal will be remembered but it's Jack and his through ball which made, cutting open a defence worth hundreds of millions. But then injury struck him again and was subbed off.

Fashion Sakala Jr - 6

Huge night for him with starts rare this season. Could have helped out more at Firmino's goal but pace in behind caused the opposition a few issues.

Ryan Kent - 5

Got into attacking spaces but there's always the sense Kent could be doing more. Didn't have the same directness as Sakala on the opposite side and everything seemed a bit safe.

Antonio Colak - 5

Didn't stop working off the ball but the towering Liverpool centre-back's dominated him in the air.

Leon King - 5

Unenviable task of stepping up in place of Goldson. Linked with Manchester United pre-match and showed glimpses of potential, but Firmino beat him in the second goal act and star power proved pivotal.

Steven Davis - 5

Elder statesman replaced Jack but couldn't do anything as McGregor sold him short for the third goal.

Rabbi Matondo - 4

Brought on with his team 4-1 down so it was a matter of pride more than anything else.

Alfredo Morelos - 4

See above. Isolated during his time on the park.
